Sculptor Leonie Rhodes helps young students make superheroes art Superhero sculptures help mould young artists at Tweed Regional Gallery school holiday workshop In movies, television, toys and all manner of accoutrements, superheroes have become a major driving force in popular culture, especially among children. A group of six to 12-year-olds has come together to draw on that influence and discover their own sculpting superpowers. The sculpting workshop was part of the school holiday program at the Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre in northern New South Wales. For internationally renowned sculptor and arts educator Leonie Rhodes, working with kids is one of her greatest passions. "It's one of the most fulfilling parts of the work that I do," she said. "It's the exact opposite of how I normally am, which is in my workshop very quiet, very focused. "It gives balance to that so I come out into the world and I get inspired and I enjoy inspiring young people." The kids took some inspiration from the gallery's Phantom Art Show exhibition . Rhodes said using superheroes as models helped the kids uncover their own super talents. "They are an amazing group actually, all really talented," she said. "They all had remembered everything I had said at the beginning and followed along and did things without me asking, so it was a fantastic group." Finding beauty in diversity is a major theme of her teachings. "I think that we all are super in so many ways and we all have our own powers," Rhodes said. "We each have unique skills that, when we bring [them] together in a group, we can change the world and do incredible things." The kids themselves had all manner of ideas for what super powers they would like to have, including flying, telepathy and super speed. However, it was not just the heroes that had captured their imaginations. "I'd probably be good, even though villains are good because they make the story more interesting," Scarlett, aged 10, said. Violet, also 10, has always loved The Joker and, if she had telepathic skills, was certain what she would use them for — "Evil" she said simply, with a grin.

The board approved a proposal from Jesse and Cathy Marion of Houston, Texas, that they would not auction any of the oil paintings from the Prendergast will or estate or from the Packard family in exchange for $60,000 in 2016. Rankin said, in December 2015, library officials would focus their attention in 2016, with the help of the Marions and the art community, on finding community-minded individuals or organizations that would want to buy the oil painting collection to keep it in Jamestown. Rankin said Thursday to The Post-Journal that the deal with the Marions was completed at the end of 2016, and that there was no deal for 2017. “There was a possibility (of a deal) for 2017.
